Socialization should be focused on exposure rather than interaction. Creating a neutral dog in public places is more important than a friendly dog. Sitting in a park and simply watching the world go by in a calm manner will create a well-rounded dog.
Walking through crowds keeping the puppy focused on you will create a confident and focused dog.
Socialization does not mean interaction. Interactions with people and other dogs should be very calculated and supervised, to ensure proper communications are being observed and corrections/body language is being respected.
I recommend every 1/10 people you pass on a walk get to interact with your puppy IF puppy is being calm, sitting nicely. I recommend every 0/15 dogs you pass on a walk get introduced. Meaning your puppy should NEVER meet another dog on a walk. Schedule puppy meet ups or play dates with friends, families and neighbors.
Listen to your puppy, if your puppy backs away from someone, DO NOT force interaction.
Its hard to not let your puppy meet everyone, especially since they as SO cute BUT its so important not to let them meet everyone.
IF you allow your puppy to meet everyone/everything on a walk or out in public you are now teaching that puppy they get to meet everyone, and the one time you pass someone without letting puppy meet will cause confusion and frustration. They will bark, whine, howl, lunge and pull towards people eager to meet them since that “seems to be the norm”
IF you let your puppy meet someone out and about, ENSURE your puppy is calm and sitting before letting the puppy approach for attention. DO NOT feel bad for saying NO or Not today to someone.
